Program Outline

The ITIS program is structured into semesters. The standard duration of study is four semesters for the ITIS Master Program. Students having completed the M.Sc. studies with very good results will be offered to continue with PhD studies at the participating universities. For the PhD programs please have a look here:

Research Focuses

Every student in the ITIS program is required to choose a research focus which best correspond to the student's interest. This is the corner-stone for each student's personalised study program. The research focus drives the decision of the student's research group, the research projects they may undertake and the range of course modules that can make up their common study section.

Depending on the university there are different main research focuses available:

TU Braunschweig

The research and teaching emphasis of TU Braunschweig for ITIS is in the area of information systems and networking. Here, one of the core challenges of information systems is the complex interaction between humans and information. This topic is approached from multiple angles, ranging from semantic approaches, intelligent queries, emerging semantics, to also covering the interaction of businesses with information systems in the fields of business intelligence and economic information management. Furthermore, Braunschweig has a strong emphasis on challenges in the area of networking. Here, research topics include distributed systems and cloud computing, network security, and theoretical and algorithmical aspects of challenges in network research.

TU Clausthal

In Clausthal research and education in Computer Science and Information Systems are concentrated in the Department of Informatics. Emphasis in research and research training is on Interactive Intelligent Information Systems (3IS). Here we investigate models, architectures, methods and applications of future internet-based and embedded information systems. We have research groups working in the areas of computational intelligence, database systems, web information systems, human-centred information systems, social networks, mobile and enterprise computing, software systems engineering, embedded systems, automotive and safety-critical systems, IT services and cloud computing, internet-based business processes, computer graphics and multimedia. Within the university and beyond, our department contributes to a number of interdisciplinary research centres.

University of Göttingen

The institute of computer science (IfI) at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen focuses on different research fields in the area of computer science and related fields. For the ITIS Master's program the main research focus is set on the area of networking and communications. Various research topics ranging from architectures, protocols and applications for wired as well as wireless communication networks, to network and communication systems security, cloud computing, as well as social networks and socio-aware computing, are being investigated in terms of design, analysis, performance evaluation and optimizations. A special focus is set on recent technologies, such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), wireless sensor networks (WSN), mesh networks, peer-to-peer networks (P2P), grid and cloud computing, as well as social computing, taking up the upcoming challenges in these research areas. Additionally, the evolution of mobile networks and the technologies for the next generations of mobile networks plays an important role in research. As one of the fundamental challenges in all types of computer networks, security mechanisms are considered from classical security mechanisms to novel soft security mechanisms such as trust and reputation systems. New approaches from the area of biologically inspired learning and supervised learning as well as from the area of algorithmic and machine learning are applied in different contexts. Moreover, the software engineering for distributed systems in terms of quality assurance and testing is one of the research focuses in the institute of computer science in Göttingen.

University of Hannover

Teaching and Research in Computer Science in Hannover focuses methods and tools to develop and control complex information processing systems. Institutes are active in the following three main areas with many synergies between them:

  • interaction between humans and technical systems, as well as system/system interactions
  • access, management and usage of information and knowledge
  • complexity of technical systems
The L3S Research Center focuses on all issues of Web Science, as one of the leading institutes in that area world wide, and is active in many national and international projects to investigate new solutions in the areas of web search, web information management, collective intelligence, virtual communities and collaboration, web research infrastructues, web governance and future internet.
